I also didn’t make any absolute statements about whether VAPs can all definitely be changed but that if we are operating on a method/ideology of transformation and prevention there are certain ways we should go about it. Many VAPs can’t or won’t be changed, and worse, many traditional forms of therapy for abusers can actually encourage and enable them and doesn’t change them. We should be thorough and honest about what a real changed abuser looks like and about the fact that not all of them will achieve that. If a changed abuser is possible, I would only want to trust them with reforming other abusers. Again, ultimately they aren’t my focus.
